First round pick Jim McDaniels "Utah from Texas" per AP.

"Utah used the top pick, which it acquired in an earlier trade with Texas, to choose 7-0 Jim McDaniels..." per AP

McDaniels is shown to have been drafted by the Stars by most present-day draft lists. And an AP article published on 1971-03-16 states that McDaniels was selected by Utah. But according to a UPI article published on 1971-03-16, "Texas selected McDaniels and traded him to the Utah Stars."

Many historical accounts of this draft indicate that Gilmore was made available, before the draft began, to any ABA team which felt it had the resources to sign him. The Colonels were the only team which indicated that it did, and thus were allowed to select him first overall.
